Tips for Cavity Prevention

Posted .

Preventing cavities can be easier said than done. Maybe you don’t know where to start when maintaining your dental health. To aid you in your endeavors, Dr. David L. Ward and our team are happy to offer some general guidelines.

Consistent Dental Hygiene
Practicing good dental hygiene is imperative for preventing cavities. Consistent dental hygiene involves a few things. Brush your teeth twice a day for at least two minutes. Use short, soft strokes and remove as much plaque and leftover food particles as possible. In addition, you should brush your tongue. Dental hygiene also involves flossing every day to remove plaque and food particles from the gumline and between the teeth.

Avoid or Reduce Consumption of Sugary & Acidic Foods & Beverages
Bacteria that live in the mouth feed off of sugar. If you reduce your sugar intake, you can also reduce the amount of cavity-causing bacteria in your mouth. Check food and beverage labels for sugar content. You should also be wary of acidic foods and beverages because acid can damage the tooth enamel. This in turn can lead to tooth decay.

Drink Lots of Water
Drinking water is imperative to upholding optimal oral health. Try to drink water throughout the day to rinse away food and dilute acids in the oral cavity.
