E4D In-Office Computer Porcelain Design/Milling

E4D, now known as PlanScan,  is a state of  the art in-office computer design and milling system for porcelain restorations including crowns, inlays, and veneers. E4D lets many of our patients who need crowns (or other porcelain restorations) avoid both the  second appointment and the hassles of wearing temporary crowns.

A scan is taken of your teeth using a very sophisticated imaging device. The images taken are assembled by the computer into a digital model of your mouth. Then using advanced software, we are able to design your crown digitally on the Design Center. Once Dr. Ward approves the design, the computer controlled Milling Center crafts your crown from a solid block of porcelain with amazing accuracy. After its been milled, the crown is custom colored and glazed in a small furnace to make it strong, smooth, and beautiful.

The whole process, after your tooth has been prepared for the crown,  generally takes less than an hour.  If you have other

treatment to be done, this can usually be done while the crown is being crafted. If not, you often can actually watch your crown being designed on the computer.

The completed crown is then tried in, minor adjustments are made if needed, and then it is bonded on your tooth. E4D is not appropriate for bridges, multiple adjacent restorations, or for crowns that partials will attach to. But for the majority of our patients who need crowns, or other porcelain restorations, E4D is just what the doctor ordered. And just what the patients love!
